"The arts are an essential element of education, just like reading, writing, and arithmetic...music, dance, painting, and theatre are all keys that unlock profound human understanding and accomplishment." -William Bennett, Former U.S. Secretary of Education
To make arts an essential element of every child’s education at Bayside MLK, our nonprofit, Arts+ Bayside MLK, Jr. Foundation - Empowering Students through the Arts (Previously The Center For Excellence) is dedicated to providing music, visual arts, dance, media arts and theatre as core curriculum subjects in all grades. The findings from the National Educational Longitudinal Survey are compelling:
Low socioeconomic status (SES) students benefited significantly from attending schools characterized as arts-rich (i.e., possessing a rich and complete arts curriculum) compared to peers attending arts-poor schools with regard to college attendance, grades, employment, and level of terminal degree.
Although our goal of full arts programming is a work in progress, we are excited that our Strategic Arts Education Five Year Plan has been adopted by the school board, with financial implementation having commenced in the 2019/20 school year! Traditionally, funding gaps are supplemented by the PTA or other parental foundations; however, at Bayside MLK, where almost all the students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, there is no such existing organization. That is where we come in. Arts+ Bayside MLK, Jr. Foundation is the only 501(c)(3) non-profit whose sole mission is to support arts in this school.
Please partner with us in the education of each child at Bayside MLK knowing that you are investing in a group of great kids and the future citizens of our community and our country.
